The Department of Agriculture is currently offering excellent employment opportunities for individuals interested in contributing their talents to Fresno County's agriculture industry for the position of Agricultural Technician - Seasonal (Extra-Help).

Agricultural Technicians play a key role in Fresno County's agriculture industry by performing  standardization and other inspections on seasonal agricultural commodities in order to protect the consumer, the environment, and the industry. Note: Temporary (extra-help) employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked, are not entitled to benefits, do no obtain permanent status and serve at the will of the department head.

Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

 Samples of Duties:

The information listed below is meant to serve as samples of job duties and responsibilities for positions in this extra-help classification.   • Inspects a variety of seasonal agricultural commodities in areas such as packing houses, wineries and grading sheds and issues certificates of inspection for compliance with regulations relating to standards.
  • Directs the reconditioning or destruction of products below minimum requirements.
  • Maintains records and prepares routine reports of inspection progress.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • The California Food and Agriculture Code and California Code of Regulations as it pertains to agriculture;
  • Applicable Fresno County ordinances related to commodities standards and inspection;
  • Basic principles of botany, entomology, plant pathology, physical science and related laboratory techniques;
  • Common agricultural crops, their varieties and diseases;
  • Farming practices used in establishing, maintaining, and harvesting agricultural crops;
  • Chemicals used in basic plant and soil science as related to agricultural crop production;
  • Safe driving practices;
  • Basic mathematics.

Skills/Abilities to:

  • Gather designated data and keep accurate, legible records;
  • Read, understand, and interpret laws, regulations, and technical materials;
  • Effectively manage multiple work assignments and meet established deadlines;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all organizational levels, as well as with other agencies and the public;
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, accountability and good judgment.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must qualify under one (1) of the options listed below:

OPTION 1:

Education: Completion of twelve (12) semester units of coursework in agricultural, life, or physical sciences that is acceptable within the United States' accredited college or university system.

OPTION 2:

Experience: One (1) year of full-time, paid work experience in agriculture or farming.

In addition to the options listed above, the following is required:

License: Must obtain one (1) valid Seasonal Agricultural Inspector license, issued by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, necessary to inspect a specific seasonal agricultural commodity in Fresno County, as determined by the Department of Agriculture, within two (2) weeks from the date of hire.

License: Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending on the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one or more of the processes listed below.

  • Written Examination
  • Oral Examination - An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.

Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list effective for a minimum of 3 months (and may be extended up to an additional 12 months) and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
